Caravan BBQ on slide used inside a caravan tunnel boot space

What’s the best caravan BBQ setup: slide-out, bayonet, or fully portable?

Table of Contents

Last updated: 6 Feb 2026

Answer (TL;DR): The best caravan BBQ setup depends on how you travel. Slide-out tunnel-boot setups are the easiest day-to-day, bayonet connection is convenient when done correctly, and fully portable bottle BBQs suit occasional cooks. If you plan to use a bayonet outlet, choose a BBQ with built-in flame failure, such as Sizzler Deluxe 2.0 or Sizzler MAX.

Safety & compliance (Australia)

  • If a BBQ connects to a caravan bayonet/quick-connect outlet, it should be fitted with a Flame Failure Device (thermocouple-based).
  • Do not DIY gas modifications — installation and checks should be done by a licensed gas fitter.
  • Always follow the BBQ’s data label and manufacturer instructions.

Comparison: Caravan BBQ setup styles (and which Sizzler fits)

Each setup style suits a different travel pattern. This table compares the common options and shows where Sizzler Deluxe 2.0 and Sizzler MAX fit best.

Setup style Best for Why people like it Watch-outs Sizzler fit
Slide-out tunnel boot Frequent cooks, touring couples, families Fastest setup, tidy storage, BBQ is always ready to use Requires accurate measurements, correct slide choice, and heat clearance Deluxe 2.0 (compact) or MAX (larger capacity)
Bayonet-connected BBQ Clean setups, fewer gas bottles Convenient fuel supply, quick pack-up BBQ must be bayonet-suitable and have flame failure Sizzler Deluxe 2.0 or Sizzler MAX
Fully portable (gas bottle) Occasional cooks, weekend trips Simple, flexible, minimal installation Not automatically suitable for bayonet outlets If bayonet use is planned, choose a caravan BBQ with flame failure

Why slide-out setups get used more

Most people don’t stop using a BBQ because of the food; they stop because setup is annoying. Slide-out tunnel-boot setups remove friction: pull out, cook, wipe down, slide back. When the BBQ is easy to access, it actually gets used.

Can I Install A Slide on my Own?

Installation of the slide can be done by yourself with just a little DIY handiness. Most slides (like the Sizzler range of slides) will come with predrilled holes or marks for where to drill the slide in. The following steps can be used to install a caravan or RV slide on your own:

  1. Place the slide into the boot space. Make sure the slide is sitting behind the seals and the door can close. This includes the thumblocks found on the front of the slides
  2. Places washers/spacers under the slide until the top slide part can slide out of the boot space without rubbing on the seal - this is super important because you don't want the slide rubbing/cutting the seal on your door!
  3. Once you have the required height of spacers/washers required simply place those number of weashers under each predrilled hole.
  4. If the base of your space is thick enough a simple screw can be used to secure the slide ont ot he floor - the screw should be a flast head screw and will pass through the bottom of the slide - through the hole in the washers/spacers and into the floor
n.b - make sure you choose the correct size screw that will penetrate the floor without being so long it penetrates all the way through
n.b - make sure you do not over tighten the screw or else the screw can spin on the spot and will be loose. Only tighten the screw until it just firmly grips and the drill or screw driver provides resistance to turning.
  5. You can also use pop rivets or bolts nad nuts for some boot spaces

When bayonet connection makes sense (and when it doesn’t)

Bayonet outlets are convenient, but only when the BBQ is designed for them. A hose that fits doesn’t mean the setup is appropriate. If bayonet use is part of your plan, flame failure should be your baseline requirement, followed by correct hose and isolation choices. Nearly all new caravans sold in Australia should have legally suitable Bayonet connection points - which usually must be external to enclosed spaces. If in doubt call a licenced gas fitter.

Choosing between Sizzler Deluxe 2.0 and Sizzler MAX

Deluxe 2.0 is the easier fit for most caravans and suits everyday meals. MAX is better for deeper cooking surfaces, bigger cooks, and feeding extra people. Both are caravan-ready — the decision is mainly about space and how you cook.

A quick “before you buy” checklist

  • Measure your tunnel boot opening, not just the floor space.
  • Decide how often you’ll cook and for how many people.
  • If using a bayonet outlet, make flame failure non-negotiable.
  • Check total weight and ease of lifting in/out.
  • Match the BBQ to the right slide system (straight vs swivel).

FAQ

What’s the easiest caravan BBQ setup?

A slide-out tunnel-boot setup is usually the easiest day-to-day because it removes setup friction and stores neatly.
